Our children absolutely loved having Iron Age Matt with them for the day. From the moment they walked into the hall and were greeted by someone in traditional historic costume, they were hooked. Matt was great with the children; he kept them enthralled with stories about Iron Age life, got them up close to some artefacts and typical animal furs of the time before launching them all into warrior training. Everyone - even the staff - had a great day!
The Iron Age Experience has visited our school on several occasions and it is always a fantastic day. Matt is so enthusiastic, so knowledgeable and so organised, which means staff and children alike have a real treat. So much is packed into one day from an introductory assembly, to shield making; from artefact handling to warrior training, with the children hanging on every word because Matt really looks the part, too. It really is an experience!
Matt's Iron Age Day was well resourced, engaging and informative throughout. Every child learned a great deal and came away wanting more. Matt was professional, highly organised and fantastic with the children. The set up of the day allowed for every single child to have hands-on experiences, learn interesting facts and be active too. Thank you Matt.
We were so fortunate to have Matt come to our school for a whole days workshop. He arrived and set up without any involvement from me, ensuring we had time for a quick briefing before the day began and then, as soon as the children arrived, he was ready to go. The children were utterly captivated. The were engaged throughout the day and took part in so many tasks and lessons. The children became warriors, learned about hierarchies, trade, and weaponry, they got to experience furs, chainmail and grinding wheat, they learnt about roundhouses and how hill forts were built.
We have also used all the materials and worksheets you left with us, its been really useful to extend the learning on this topic. The day was incredible. Thank you Matt, we can't wait to see you again in two years!!

Dear Matt
I really enjoyed painting our own shields
and i also enjoyed looking at the animal skins.
I learned that you use smooth stone instead of sharp stones. (for sling shots).
The reason why you don't use sharp stones is because they will go in a other direction.
My favourite part was using the spears and the swords.
The best one was the spears because i like hitting the targets and it makes me feel like i am in the ion age.
Recently filmed with Matt and his team of Celtic warriors. I thought they did a fantastic job for us. We filmed over four, very long, days, once late into the night. They were a pleasure to work with; patient, punctual, helpful and creative. They provided their own kit and equipment, which made them good value for money, and thanks to their experience of mocking up combats, we safely staged several pitched battles, one in almost pitch darkness. I would gladly work with them again.

Matt was a joy to work with for our Young Friends Sleepover event. He is organised and works to deadlines as well as creative. He ran a series of great interactive workshop for us based on the Celts and was able at short notice to provide extra activities for a partially sighted child who was attending, enabling them to engage fully in the activity.
The children loved it and I have had some lovely feedback from parents. One parent said it was like her daughter had swallowed a book about the Iron Age because she was talking about it non stop.
A fantastic day thoroughly enjoyed by all staff and children. Matt engaged the children from the minute he walked into the room and the children were engaged with the day, which was full of facts and activities. They learnt lots at an appropriate level and were full of positive comments the day after, particularly about the “Warrior Training” which enabled them to use the shields they had made and decorated. We would have no hesitation in recommending you to other schools. Well worth the money!.
Bradford on Avon MuseumSociety
As part of our July event to learn more about the Iron Age Hill Fort at Budbury, Bradford on Avon, the Museum Society invited Matt Russell to come along and provide an insight into life at the time of the Celts.
During the day, 170 people visited to see the fascinating artefacts which Matt had brought. These included animal skins, iron bars, weapons, jewellery and clothing. Matt also provided popular activities for children: shield and spear tip decorating, pouch making and woad ‘tattoos’
During the day Matt gave short talks on aspects of Iron Age life enabling those present to understand how different life was in those times. He shared his enthusiasm as well as his knowledge. He was particularly good humoured and patient with the children, answering their questions and teaching them individually how to handle weapons safely.
Some families stayed for nearly an hour enjoying the relaxed and informal atmosphere, handling artefacts and trying the activities. Some remarked on how well organised and how interesting the experience had been.
We at the museum agreed that the day had been a great success, largely due to Matt’s careful preparation and his expertise in sharing his subject. We would highly recommend Matt and his Iron Age Experience.
